"I believe that during these times, we should not forget that many sacrificed to regain our democracy."- Maria Corazon Sumulong Cojuangco-Aquino

Many deaths have passed this country, but never in the span of more than a decade have I seen the whole country mourn. I have been informed that the last time that the Filipino people united in mourning happened during Benigno Aquino's wake, and now, 26 years after, we mourn for his significant other, Cory Aquino.

I am a 90's baby, and for the last two years of her service, I had spent it cooing and being a carefree child, so I wasn't aware at all of how she was as a President. Maybe she was a good commander-in-chief. Maybe she was a good economist. Maybe she was a great leader. I wouldn't know, I wasn't there to witness it myself, but there is one thing that I am sure of, and I believe that many people could attest to this fact, she led and honed the country with gentle hands, those of a good, nurturing mother. She gave outmost care which spread like wildfire, powerful, yet silent producing an effect which would last for all time.

Watching the statements given out by her children, I found myself shedding tears for the woman I never knew or even met personally, but affected my life for some reason. Upon pondering, I now understood why.

I am a Filipino, and with that being the utmost bond, with that being the strongest connecting link, I, as well as other Filipinos, mourn for the loss of the mother of our country. Her blood runs in our veins. We are one with her. She made us realize that we all share that in common, and that fact is something we can never change. To turn our back on that is to turn our back against our very core and essence.

Last July 31,2009, we have lost a great mother, a great political figure, and a great icon. It is a great loss for us Filipinos, but with every loss, we gain something in return: FREEDOM. Always, we would never fail to remember her presence because of the most wonderful gift that could ever be given, and would last as long as we keep the fire burning.

President Cory Aquino, thank you for making us see the power that we hold once we unite against a common goal. Thank you for always believing, for never letting your faith wither even in the presence of the most difficult trials this country could ever fathom. Thank you for accepting us as your children. Thank you for the gift of freedom that you have bestowed selflessly upon our hands. Thank you for giving us enough reasons to be proud of our heritage and lineage. Thank you.

We promise to try our hardest not to feel sad and instead, we will celebrate your life.

Yellow will never go out of style for us Filipinos, Maam.

Bless the country from Heaven Maam.
